Setting Up E-mail

Attention AOL users!

How to set your e-mail preferences in Netscape Navigator 3.0x:
  1. Click on Options from the Netscape Menu.
  2. Click on Mail and News Preferences...
  3. Click on the Identity tab.
  4. At Your Name:, enter your name. (Example: John Doe)
  5. At Your Email:, enter the email address where you want to receive your class-related email. (Example: jdoe@bellatlantic.net or jdoe@aol.com)
  6. Click on the Servers tab.
  7. At Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server:, enter the server information provided to you by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Note: You will need to contact your ISP for the SMTP server information.
  8. At Incoming Mail (POP3) Server:, If you are using a UMUC email address to receive your class-related email, enter the portion of your email address that appears to the right of the @ sign.(Example: polaris.umuc.edu or nova.umuc.edu)

    Note: If you are using another email address to receive your class-related email, contact the ISP where your email address resides for incoming mail server information. When calling your ISP, explain you are setting your Netscape Incoming Mail Preferences.

  9. At POP3 User Name, enter the piece of your e-mail address to the left of the @ sign.(Example: jdoe)
  10. Click on OK to save your settings or Cancel to abandon your changes.

How to set your e-mail preferences in Netscape Communicator 4.0x:
  1. Click on Edit from the Netscape Menu.
  2. Click on Preferences...
  3. Double-click on Mail & Groups.
  4. Click on Mail Server.
  5. At Mail server user name:, enter the user name for email address where you want to receive your class-related email. (Example: jdoe or bsmith)
  6. At Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:, enter the server information provided to you by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Note: You will need to contact your ISP for the SMTP server information.
  7. At Incoming mail server:, If you are using a UMUC email address to receive your class-related email, enter the portion of your email address that appears to the right of the @ sign. (Example: polaris.umuc.edu or nova.umuc.edu)

    If you are using another email address to receive your class-related email, contact the ISP where your email address resides for incoming mail server information. When calling your ISP, explain you are setting your Netscape Incoming Mail Preferences.

  8. In the Mail Server Type section, click on the POP3 radio button and click on the Leave messages on server after retrieval checkbox.
  9. Click on OK to save your settings or Cancel to abandon your changes.
